how do other enighborhoods of SD compare interms of gender distribution across age groups

Pacific Beach isn't unusual: it belongs to a group of central, urban neighborhoods where women outnumber men among voters under 30 and men outnumber women in middle age. I compared the 43 community areas in San Diego County that each have at least 10,000 male and female voters. As before, the percentages are women's share of male and female voters only.

Patterns

  • Urban core and beach areas look like Pacific Beach. North Park, Normal Heights, Middletown, Hillcrest, Downtown and Ocean Beach all have more women among voters under 30 and more men at ages 45–64. Pacific Beach ranks 6th for share of young women, so it's high but not the highest.
  • Hillcrest and Downtown stand out for men in middle age. Hillcrest is only 38.5% women at ages 45–64 and 45.7% at 65+. Downtown is 43–47% women in every age group over 30. They are the only large communities where men outnumber women among voters 65+.
  • University N is a different case. It has many young women (58.0%), probably because of UCSD, but it leans female at older ages too, with 57.7% women at 65+.
  • Suburban and inland areas follow the typical pattern. Rancho Peñasquitos, Mira Mesa, Rancho Bernardo, Alpine, Lakeside and Ramona are slightly male or even among 18–29s (46–49% women) and become more female with age. Rancho Bernardo reaches 58.3% women at 65+, the highest in the group.
